Fundraise for Aphasia!

Story

I'm taking part in the 2016 Melbourne Marathon Festival and hoping to raise much needed funds for the Australian Aphasia Association.

Aphasia is communication disability that results from damage to the parts of the brain responsible for language. It can affect listening, speaking, reading and writing, using numbers or using gestures. It does not affect intelligence. The most common cause of aphasia is stroke; approximately a third of stroke survivors will have a form of aphasia. Aphasia is an invisible disease- you cannot tell a person has aphasia by looking at them, and there is very little awareness and understanding about aphasia in the community. That is why it is so important that we raise awareness, and increase support in the community for people with this condition!

This October I will be running to support the amazing work that The Australian Aphasia Association are doing for people with aphasia. They are a non-profit organisation that aims to support and advocate for people with aphasia, their families and the professionals who work with them.

I am honoured to be a part of this amazing race and helping a great cause, and I’d really appreciate your support.

Thank you for your support and helping to make a difference!

Aphasia is caused by stroke or other damage to the language centres of the brain. Head injury, tumours, or infections and inflammation in the brain may be other causes.

Aphasia affects every person differently. Some people have only mild difficulties, others have very severe communication problems. Importantly, people with aphasia are competent and intelligent and still have thoughts, opinions and emotions. They can still solve problems and can still make decisions.

However people with aphasia often know what they want to say, but have difficulties getting their messages out.
