Rohan's Marathon for NET cancer
Story
This October I am running my very first marathon!!!! My previous running experience includes running errands, running away from home, running to the toilet and watching 'Cool Runnings'! Lol!
5 years ago I was involved in a serious workplace accident, where I caught on fire and received 3rd degree burns to 35% of my body. I spent 6 weeks in hospital undergoing many grafting operations, and I also ended up with DVT's and a superbug infection while I was there! And although I still have many lingering effects, after many years of rehab and a few more operations, I am finally back to some form of respectable fitness! And what better way to test out this new found fitness than with a marathon!!!
Now I am not just doing this to extremely challenge myself, but I am actually mainly doing it for an amazing cause! I am running for the 'Unicorn Foundation'. A charity very close to mine and my families hearts!
Last year my wife was diagnosed with a Neuroendocrine Tumour (NET) in her lung. A rare form of cancer commonly called carcinoid. It was a huge shock especially considering she had never smoked, and it was a very scary time for all of us. But we were very lucky to find it so early before it had spread, and after surgery to remove half of her lung she is now currently cancer free! She went through many months of pain and rehabilitation too, but she is now back fitter than ever. And she is my inspiration!
Anyway, the Unicorn Foundation are a foundation set up to raise awareness and funds for NET cancer as well as provide patient support! Our family came to rely on them last year, and they were just amazing! And I would like to give back to them by trying to raise as much money as I can towards their cause!
