Runs with Mel

Story

In 2010 I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease and went through many medications, hospitalizations, and finally surgery in 2012. There is no known cure, but it is now much more manageable and I am able to lead a relatively normal lifestyle.

Crohn’s Disease is categorized as an Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD), along with Colitis. More than 75,000 Aussies and 233,000 Canadians are diagnosed with IBD, and unfortunately my story is one of the better ones. Not only are there painful physical effects, but all too often people suffer in silence as it is socially taboo to talk about digestive issues… and poop. There, I said it.

My goal is to eventually qualify for the Boston Marathon. With every marathon that I run, I raise awareness and fundraise for Crohn's and Colitis Australia in order to give back to a community that has given me such great support. It provides education, advocacy, counselling, increases awareness, and generates and funds research for a cure.

You can learn more about my story and how I train for a marathon while dealing with Crohn's by following me on Instagram, @runswithmel.

I would greatly appreciate any donation you can offer to Crohn’s and Colitis Australia. Your donation, however big or small, can make a real difference in the lives of people like me who are affected by these diseases.

Thank you for your support!

Crohn's & Colitis Australia

For more than three decades, Crohn’s & Colitis Australia (CCA) has been empowering the more than 100,000 Australian men, women and children living with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis – collectively known as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) – to live fearlessly.

While we invest in research for a cure, CCA continues to advocate for world best treatments and health services for those living with IBD. Through our programs we offer education and support for Australia’s growing Crohn’s and colitis community and raise awareness of the disease. Importantly, our services are offered free of charge.
